Australia Dominates Over Türkiye at the First FIFA World Cup Game Hosted in Vancouver

On June 14, the Socceroos faced off against Türkiye at BC Place for Vancouver’s first game as a FIFA World Cup host. Australia got the win after two excellent goals and an impressive goaltending performance.

BC Place was buzzing with energy from both Australia and Türkiye fans. Flags, inflatable kangaroos, a sea of both yellow and red filled the stadium. Vancouver was truly the place to be to watch the match, with fans from both teams filling the streets with loud chants.

Türkiye missed five straight tournaments before qualifying this year, making this an important game for the country. However, Australia did not have any mercy after winning with a 2-0 score.

Nestory Irankunda opened the scoring at the 27’ with a low shot, celebrating by punching the corner flag. The whole stadium erupted in cheers at the goal. Yet Türkikye refused to stay behind, with a blast from Abdülkerim Bardakçı that was stopped by Patrick Beach.

Beach made eight saves for Vancouver. The 22 year old goalkeeper shocked the world with his outstanding performance during the game. 

Conner Metcalfe extended the lead by capitalizing on Ismail Yuksek’s turnover in the 75’. With a left-foot shot to the bottom corner, Metcalf made BC Place roar once again. 

It seemed like Türkiye underestimated just how much the Socceroos wanted this win. Even when outshot, Australia managed to cling on to the lead and extend it throughout the game. 

Vancouver saw two amazing teams face off against each other with loud and supportive fans. Next game will be Canada vs Qatar on Jun 18, expecting even more noise, more energy, and more love for the game and the country.
