The Vancouver Canucks unveiled their Lunar New Year jersey for 2025 and it’s all about the Year of the Snake.
Local artist, Nicole Jang, has wrapped the fan-favourite Canucks skate logo inside a brilliant red and gold snake with delicate details highlighting different elements of Lunar New Year.
“I wanted my design to represent the values we want to carry with us into a new year, serving as emblems to guide us forward in unity,” Jang said.
Jang took inspiration from snakes’ key characteristics: intuitiveness, intelligence, and resourcefulness for the design while the shou character featured on the snake’s face represents longevity and good fortune.
The logo is intersected with shapes and lines that represent unity and harmony, as well as a lozenge, a symbol of luck and victory. Jang’s design is inspired by books, art, and the city of Vancouver.
“My nonlinear process involved immersing myself into books about papercut folkart, symbolism, and rebuses in Chinese art; and aimlessly meandering through my favourite places in Chinatown with a sketchbook,” she said. “I was grateful that I was able to use the skate logo as the base for the design, because the snake's shape lends itself so organically around the form and welcomes a sense of harmony.”
Jang’s design is gorgeous, and her attention to detail really pays off.
“I'm most proud of how every aspect of this design was made with intention. Each detail was considered and contributes to a larger story of optimism looking ahead,” she said.
Lunar New Year night is the Canucks’ first community night at Rogers Arena in 2025, on a roster that also features Black Excellence night, Women’s Empowerment night, and Community Heroes night. Each community night is an opportunity to bring the fanbase together and celebrate different parts of the Canucks community and Lunar New Year promises to kick them off with a bang.
“Celebrating the Lunar New Years with the Canucks is a reminder of how diverse and wide-reaching their community is,” Jang said. “Sharing a cultural exchange and embracing our diversity strengthens our connections with each other.”
The Canucks will celebrate Lunar New Year on January 21 when they host the Buffalo Sabres, although actual Lunar New Year isn’t until Jan. 29. The game will also feature live entertainment and a market located on the concourse, all aiming to bring the crowd together in celebration of the Year of the Snake.
