Girls at the Games partnered with Greta, and Canucks Army for an amazing night of hockey.
Though the outcome wasn’t what we wanted the energy never wavered. Girls showed up in droves, rocking their Canucks jerseys, and merch ready to cheer for their team. The night was filled with laughter, cheering, and some yelling. Canucks Army were giving prizes away throughout the night, building connections between fans! One Broken Biker were also there spreading giving out prizes and bringing awareness to their cause of helping injured bikers.
The atmosphere and positivity radiating throughout the venue was electric. Greta created an amazing, safe and welcoming environment for all fans. Between periods and during commercial breaks, conversation was flowing. Shooting hoops, playing skee ball, and dominating at Mario Cart were ways some tried to cope with the intensity of the game. Even when the boys were losing the crowd was invested.
Boeser opening the scoring for the Canucks shifted the energy to another level. The cheers and excitement were off the charts. When Hronek scored the second spirits were beginning to lift further. Though the final score was 6-2 Oilers, it didn’t stop the joy emanating in the space. The attitude of all the girls at the event was incredible and created such a wonderful experience.
During the event, Girls at the Games got to meet Kirstin Tynan, the keeper for the Vancouver Rise. It was one of the most amazing experiences. Connecting with her and hearing her experiences about being back and playing for her home city was incredible.
Having a space for girls to come together and talk about their love of hockey was an incredible experience. Every female sports fan should get to experience watching the sport they love with a group women who also love the sport.
