Mexico Gets Victory Over South Africa 16 Years Later

The famous Estadio Azteca presented a long overdue rematch between Mexico and South Africa on June 11. The FIFA World Cup 2026 has begun with an electric first match in an iconic venue. 

16 years ago, Mexico and South Africa played the opening match in Johannesburg. South Africa’s SiphiweTshabalala opened the scoring, which would then be equalized by Mexico’s Rafael Marquéz. This even score game set a rivalry in motion.

The team’s faced off again for a rematch in which Mexico was victorious with a 2-0 win.

Mexico’s fanbase made the stadium roar as they sang the national anthem with pride and cheered loudly from beginning to end. It is no secret the host country holds the sport close to their hearts. Mexico is known for their passion and dedication to most things, especially soccer.

Julián Quiñonez opened the scoring at the 9’, with a precise strike that went between William’s legs. The goal electrified the sea of green around the stadium. Mexico held the lead, going 1-0 to halftime.

The match was characterized by three red cards, the most in any opening World Cup match. South Africa held two while one was given to the host country.

Starting the second half, Roberto Alvarado crossed the ball to set up Raúl Jiménez. This header shot marked his first World Cup goal in the 67’. Back in 2020, Jiménez suffered an injury that led to a fractured skull.Six years later, Jiménez defied the odds and scored the game winning goal for Mexico at home.

The game marked Mexico’s eight time playing in an opening match, their first time winning the match too. 

Emotions ran high for both teams but playing at home was definitely advantageous for the Mexican team. 16 years later, they finally got their win against South Africa.

This rivalry game was the perfect start to an exciting tournament.
