What are the Invictus Games? Founded in 2014 the charity ran the first ever games in London that same year. The focus of the games is to “bring support to sick, and wounded service personnel and veterans through rigours sports”. The mission of the games is “[i]nspiring the international communities through the power of the unconquerable human spirit.” These athletes prove that you can overcome any obstacle placed in your life.
Through the games people from all over are able to come together, connect, support and cheer on incredible athletes. There have been 23 different countries involved in this community. The athletes involved are from all stations, ranks and experiences within the special forces. The games are a way for international returning injured, sick or wounded service workers to reclaim their purpose and identity. Sports are meant to unify and uplift people, which is exactly what the Invictus Games is all about.
The Vancouver Whistler Invictus Games will bring together around 500 athletes from 20 communities to compete. Events will range from alpine skiing to swimming to wheel chair rugby. The games bring exposure to many amazing sports and athletes that have been working hard to prepare. The Invictus Games also brings exposure to sports that are often overlooked by the general sports world.
“The Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 will offer a global platform to expand the range and profile of winter adaptive sports. With deep respect, I’m also pleased to share that the Games in Canada will be held in partnership with the First Nations, in the spirit of truth and reconciliation with Indigenous communities.” Prince Harry
The work that the Invictus Games is doing with local Indigenous communities is amazing. They not only give back to those who dedicated their lives to serving their countries, but are also giving back to the local communities hosting the games.
