Toronto Blue Jays make first World Series appearance in 32 years

Blue Jays celebrate ALCS win
TORONTO BLUE JAYS/ X

On October 18, 2025 the Toronto Blue Jays secured their spot in the World Series for the first time since 1993. The last time the team made the World Series, only 6 players on the team were alive.

After 1993, the Blue Jays went into a playoff drought despite having some incredible teams and players. The last time they made the American League Division Series (ALDS) was in 2015, where they played the Texas Rangers. They beat the Rangers, securing the ALDS title. They then went on to play the Kansas City Royals in the American League Championship Series (ALCS) where they unfortunately lost.

In 2016 they managed to clinch a Wild Card position, where they swept the Baltimore Orioles. They then went on to play the Texas Rangers again in the ALDS. This win over the Rangers advanced them to the ALCS where they fell to the Cleveland Indians.

In 2022 they again clinched a Wild Card position, but fell to the Seattle Mariners in the first 2 games of a best-of-3. In 2023, another Wild Card position was clinched and they played the Minnesota Twins, however, they would not advance to the ALDS.

The 2025 playoff run has been an incredible watch. The Blue Jays avoided the wild card series by finishing first in the American League East. This was the first time clinching that title since 2015.

They played the Yankees who had beat the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card series, which advanced them to the ALDS.

The Blue Jays secured their place in the ALCS with a 3-1 series win over the Yankees. Proving that they are the team to watch.

For the ALCS they would face the Seattle Mariners who finished first in the AL West. They beat out the Detroit Tigers for their first ALDS title. They are the only MLB team to never make it to the World Series.

Their final game went for 15 innings before the Mariners secured the final run to advance them to the ALCS for the first time in their history. This was also the first time since 2001 that the team had secured an AL West title.

Winning the ALCS would be a monumental moment in both teams' histories. For the Mariners it would be the first time in history the team made it to the World Series. For the Blue Jays it would be the first time in 32 years that the team would enter the World Series.

In a best-of-7 series, it looked like the Mariners may make history as they secured the first 2 wins in Toronto.

However, the Blue Jays are not ones to be counted out and secured 2 wins in Seattle. Game 5 would go to the Mariners, which forced the series back to Toronto for game 6 and a potential game 7.

Game 6 was high stakes as the Blue Jays fought to force a game 7 and the Mariners fought to earn their first World Series appearance.

The Blue Jays would end up with a 6-2 victory forcing a game 7. However, game 6 saw some incredible moments take place; such as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. tied a franchise record with his sixth post season home run. While also securing a single-postseason franchise record.

Rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage started the game securing 7 strike outs, 6 hits and only 2 runs allowed in his 5.2 innings. He also helped create some beautiful plays in the infield.

Game 7 was the one to watch as in the world of Toronto sports knows, the teams have a history of crumbling under the pressure.

For much of the game it looked as though the Mariners were about to make history for their franchise as they led the game 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning.

However, George Springer hit a 3 run homer, putting the Blue Jays on top with a 4-3 lead they hoped to maintain until the end of the game.

Springer's run would be the game winner, sending the Blue Jays to the world series for the first time in 32 years. While the Mariners would remain the only team in the MLB yet to have a World Series appearance.

The Blue Jays are set to face the LA Dodgers in the final best-of-7 matchup, with game 1 taking place at Rogers Centre in Toronto on Friday, October 24, at 5 pm. PST.
