The Vancouver Giants thrilled the crowd at the Langley Events Centre with a shoot-out win against the Victoria Royals on Feb 15. With a strong start as soon as the puck dropped in the first period, the Giants dominated the ice by relying on team effort which resulted in a 4-3 shootout win after losing 5-2 against the Royals the previous night.

Captain Marzden Leslie placed the Giants on the scoreboard with a goal just 1:44 into the game. When asked about his recent milestone for most goals by a defenseman in franchise history, Leslie said “there’s been a lot of good defenseman playing in this organization. So I think to be at the top of the list of anything like that is special.”

The second period was marked with increased intention by the Royals, who attempted to skate faster and create scoring opportunities. However, key plays by Giants defensemen Colton Roberts and Ethan Mittelsteadt allowed for the team to continue dominating the game. A powerplay goal by Ty Halarbuda late in the period increased the atmosphere at the Langley Events Centre and extended the lead.

The Royals were quick to increase momentum on the third by scoring three goals in 4:54. Nolan Stewart, Kenta Isogai and Justin Kipkie gave the Royals some hope of a win, but Halarbuda stepped up with his second goal of the night to force the Giants into overtime.

Key saves made by goalie Burke Hood allowed for no pucks on net in both overtime and the shootout. In regards to their upcoming game against the Prince George Cougars on Feb 17, Hood mentioned “there’s some ups and downs but we need to battle through that adversity.” With a one handed shootout goal, Adam Titlbach was the only scorer in the shootout, giving the Giants an exhilarating win on his birthday. Make sure to follow the Giants’ journey as they battle their way into clutching a playoff spot.
