As one of the original players on the Abbotsford Canucks roster, Jett Woo has seen this team grow from its first year in Abbotsford to a contender in the Calder Cup Finals. We caught up with him ahead of Game 4 to talk about what this run has meant to him and where the team's focus lies.
Jaslyne:
You've been on the team since the very beginning. What does it mean to you to be a part of this group that's made it this far?
Woo:
It's really rewarding, I think, is the word. I think even going back to my first year in Utica with John Stevens, Razor, you can ask them the same thing. It's exciting to see and to have all these new guys come around and incorporate them into how we are as a group. It's really exciting and rewarding to see all our hard work being paid off.
With the spotlight on the playoffs, Woo talked about how he’s pushing himself to play at his best.
Jaslyne:
What's something that you've been working on through this run to keep you at your best?
Woo:
I think just the consistency of our group away from the rink as well. But I think being able to start periods on time and consistently play our structure during games is the biggest thing.
Ahead of a pivotal Game 4, Woo gave a look into the team’s current mindset.
Jaslyne:
What's the energy in the room right now getting ready for Game 4?
Woo:
We're excited. I mean, right now we're at a kind of peace of mind knowing that we are one of the best teams in the league. We're here for a reason, and we've been doing the right things to get to this point. We get excited every game now and show that out on the ice.
Between games, recovery and focus are critical. Woo shared how the team resets after each matchup.
Jaslyne:
After each game, is there a way that you guys reset or focus in on what’s ahead?
Woo:
Yeah, I think that's a big part of the playoffs. I think right now we play a game, have a day off, play again, and just repeat that over and over. I think we've done a great job. The coaches have done a great job of giving us a day off to rejuvenate, look back, watch video, and figure out how that game was. I think we've done a good job of it this playoffs.
We’re always curious to see what type of music players are listening to on their walk-up. Ending on a fun note Jaslyne asked Woo what his go to music choice is.
Jaslyne:
When you're walking in, what music are you listening to that gets you locked in?
Woo:
That's a great question. Let me take a look here. [takes out phone] I listen to ‘Change Me’ by BigXthaPlug.
Jaslyne:
Okay, okay. Very nice. Good luck out there tonight!
Abbotsford took game 4 in a 3-2 victory, giving them a 3-1 series lead. Woo laid his body on the line blocking shots and securing the defensive line. He also gained a few penalty minutes protecting his men. Game 5 takes place June 21, 2025 at Abbotsford Centre, this is sure to be a game unlike anything we have seen before.
