Girls at the Games had the chance to catch up with Toronto Sceptres players Emma Woods and Daryl Watts after their morning skate for an exclusive behind-the-scenes conversation.
Emma Woods, who has been playing professional hockey for eight years, highlighted how the PWHL embodies everything she and her peers have worked to build for the women’s hockey community. She emphasized that the league is giving young girls something to aspire to in their hockey careers. Emma also mentioned how close-knit the team is, attributing their strong on-ice chemistry to the effort they put into bonding off the ice. Activities like playing Bananagrams, she shared, help bring the team together, though she joked that some stories would have to remain behind closed doors and made mention that Emma Maltais, a forward, takes the lead on the ‘Social Committee’. Regarding fan attendance at practices, Emma said it provides extra motivation and believes it’s a great opportunity for young fans to connect with individual players in a personal way.
Daryl Watts, newer to professional hockey, reflected on the uncertainty she faced in college about her hockey future. Now, she’s inspired by the opportunities the PWHL offers, which give girls a clear path to pursue their dreams. Like Emma, Daryl agreed that off-ice team building strengthens their on-ice chemistry, laughing as Emma teased about keeping some stories private. She was particularly moved by the dedication of fans who rearrange their schedules to watch practices, calling it an incredible experience.
As for their time in Vancouver, Emma shared her excitement about trying sushi, while Daryl mentioned having enjoyed some incredible seafood in the city. Both players appreciated being able to walk along the waterfront and exploring. Emma added that her family was flying in to catch tonight’s game, making the occasion even more special.
For Girls at the Game, the excitement was all around—the PWHL game and our first meet-up at GoodCo. on Granville made for an unforgettable day. Some of our team connected with fans and players at the game, while others kept the energy high hosting the Watch Party. The night continued with the After Party, where those who attended the game had the chance to connect with those at the Watch Party - an opportunity to build community.
Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes stories, player highlights, and exciting events. We can’t wait to keep celebrating the passion and power of what it means to be a female sports fan!
