The Vancouver Goldeneyes rocked the Pacific Coliseum on December 16, this time achieving a 2-1 final score against the Ottawa Charge. The crowd was loud and ready for some action before the holidays.
Vancouver was quick in the first period, coming up with plays as soon as the whistle blew. Hannah Miller made a pass from the dot over to Katie Chan, who got the goal horn to roar at 7:50 in the first.
This was not only Chan’s first PWHL career goal, but she scored in her hometown. A Richmond native, Chan saw an opportunity and used it in her favour to get Vancouver on the board.
The second period saw action, speed and thoughtfulness. The Coliseum gave Ottawa head coach, Carla MacLeod, a standing ovation for cancer recognition. Moments like these remind the viewers, hockey can be so much more than just a sport.
But in the end, this was a game and the Goldeneyes wanted a win. Jenn Gardiner took an opportunity to score unassisted early in the second period. At 3:36, Gardiner became the second player of the game to score for their home team in their hometown.
Vancouver goalie, Kristen Campbell, almost got a perfect game. But Ottawa’s Anna Shokhina deprived Campbell from a shutout. With a goal in 14:17 in the third period, Ottawa was now just one goal behind Vancouver.
However, the Goldeneyes played together to keep their lead and finish the game with a 2-1 final score.
“It was definitely a dream come true,” said Katie Chan after getting her first goal on home ice.
