Emerance Maschmeyer stopped a total of 28 shots to help the Vancouver Goldeneyes clutch their first ever shutout at the Pacific Coliseum. The Goldeneyes took the ice on December 6 to record a 4-0 win against the New York Sirens.
The first period was filled with action and excitement. With an early dominance by the Sirens, the home team had plenty of time to change their game for a favorable outcome. Abby Boreen put the Goldeneyes on the board at 4:42 with an assist by Tereza Vanišová.
To prevent a tie, Maschmeyer made a stick save that received a loud cheer from the crowd. Energy kept climbing as Ashton Bell scored her first goal of the season at 16:36. The lead was further pushed by Surrey native Jenn Gardiner who managed to overcome the Sirens’ man advantage and get a shorthanded goal at the 17:39.
The second period held the same intensity and action but no goals were scored.
By the third, the Sirens had increased their assertiveness as they continued to seek scoring opportunities. However, the Goldeneyes defence and goaltending were unmatched for the Sirens.
Boreen had her second goal of the night at the 5:47 with an assist by Sophie Jacques and Gardiner. The Pacific Coliseum was buzzing with energy as the final whistle blew.
The Goldeneyes finished an excellent performance with a 4-0 game. With an outstanding defence, Maschmeyer was able to remain calm and do her job in stopping the 28 shots that came her way. “My job is to show up every single night,” she said, the most important thing being “making one save at the time.”
