Vancouver Whitecaps Fall Short to Atlante FC at the Leagues Cup
The Leagues Cup 2026 is underway, a battle between the MLS and Liga MX teams. This tournament includes three countries, two leagues and one winner. The Vancouver Whitecapes faced off against Atlante FC on August 04, resulting in a 1-0 loss at BC Place.
The Whitecaps faced Atlante FC for the first time in club history. The Leagues Cup brings different opportunities for MLS teams to face off new rivals. The Liga MX is Mexico's professional league, promoting technique and most importantly, passion. With international tournaments like Leagues Cup, teams in both leagues can evaluate their skills and techniques.
The first half was characterized by an equal game on both ends. Both the Whitecaps and Atlante were trying to keep possession of the ball. Isaac Boehmer had a good save in the 24’. Atlante FC strategically gained the ball back from the ‘Caps, with quicker feet and agility to sneak into tight spaces to move towards the net.
Most of the first half was played in the midfield, a neutral game for both teams. However, at the 40’, Julio Palacios scored a goal for Atlante FC. The Whitecaps tried to tie the game before half time. Both Elloumi and Ocampo both tried shooting but were stopped by the Mexican goalie.
The Whitecaps took the opportunity to make substitutions coming into the second half. The team seemed much more motivated, with the different changes and time to regroup, the ‘Caps were creating more chances to score. Different Vancouver players tried crossing the ball, others tried to score but there was no luck.
The game ended with a 1-0 score in favor of Atlante FC. When asked about a comparison between MLS and Liga MX, Atlante head coach Miguel Herrera said “we cannot compare both leagues at the moment; the MLS is comparable to European teams.”
The Whitecaps gave a good fight but fell short to the Mexican team. They will now face Juarez FC, another team from Liga MX for the Leagues Cup.
