Vancouver Whitecaps Hold Their Own Against CF Montreàl
The Vancouver Whitecaps faced off against CF Montreàl for leg one of the TELUS Canadian Championship. The match took place at BC Place on Sept 2, with a loud crowd and hopes for another title.
Vancouver is the reigning champion, with four consecutive wins plus their first in 2015. With this goal set in mind, the ‘Caps sought opportunities to reach the attacking third as much as they could.
Montreàl struck first at the 16’, with a goal by Daniel Pereira. Vancouver kept reaching the net but were unable to get past the defenders and goalie.
At half time, the Whitecaps needed a better strategy to equalize the score. Coming back, the ‘Caps immediately made three substitutions.
The game seemed to pick up the pace, allowing Vancouver to increase the pressure. However, Montreàl would not let them finish their plays.
It was Ryan Gauld with a goal in the 77’ that gave the home team a chance to breathe again. With a pass by Caicedo, the captain was able to get past the goalie. This became Gauld’s seventh goal in the Canadian Championship, crowning him leading goal scorer for the team.
The Whitecaps will now face CF Montreàl again at Stade Saputo on Sept 16. The winner will move on to the finals.
