Vancouver Canadians just shy of a tied series against the Hillsboro Hops

C's celebrating their win
JEN FIELD/ GATG

August 5, 2025 began the 6 game series between the Vancouver Canadians and the Hillsboro Hops. This would be the last matchup between the 2 teams at Nat Bailey Stadium this season.

Game 1 of the series was marked with some struggles due to rain. Though the first inning started off dry, neither team was able to score.

By the second inning the rain began but that didn’t hinder Cristofer Torin of the Hops, who scored the opening run of the game with a home run.

The third inning saw the Hops continue to dominate the field scoring 3 runs. Whereas the Canadians couldn’t find their groove.

At the top of the fourth a rain delay was called as the second batter of the Hops went up to bat. The delay lasted less than 20 minutes as the rain began to subside slightly, but the dreary weather continued on.

After the delay the Hops scored another run during the fourth, not allowing the rain to stop their flow. This made the game 5-0 for the Hops.

The fifth inning saw runs scored by both teams. The Hops scored 2 runs, whereas the Canadians Cutter Coffey hit a home run to secure their first run of the game.

The sixth inning had 2 more runs scored by the Hops. But it was the seventh inning where the Canadians started fighting for a comeback, scoring 2 runs making the game 9-3 for the Hops.

The Hops continued their fight for the win scoring another 2 runs in the eighth inning, where the Canadians secured 1.

In the final inning the Hops were unable to secure a run. However, the Canadians fought hard to secure 3 more runs closing the gap to make the final score 10-7 for the Hops.

This would give the Hops a 1-0 series lead. The back and forth between teams would continue throughout the series.

Wednesday saw the Hops take game 2, but game 3 would go to the Canadians. Friday afternoon's game went to the Hops as well, making the series 3-1 going into Saturday night's game.

Game 5 of the series saw much better weather than Tuesday's game. The game moved much quicker as there was no rain to interfere with the players abilities.

The first inning much like game 1 saw no runs scored, however, the Canadians were able to secure the first run of the game in the bottom of the second.

The third inning saw no action score wise, but the Hops were able to score their first run of the game at the top of the fourth.

The next few innings would go without any runs for either team. The Canadians came out in the bottom of the eighth with the hopes of breaking the tie. Which they managed when a miss play occurred and Jay Harry scored what would become the game winning run.

The top of the ninth inning had the Canadians locked in with hopes to end the game. This ended up being successful with one strike out, a tag out at first, and an incredible play by second baseman J.R. Freethy to first baseman Peyton Powell to secure the final out.

The game ended 2-1 for the Canadians. The night was capped off with fireworks which were made better by the Canadians win.

The series was 3-2 for the Hops ahead of game 6 on Sunday where the Canadians looked to tie up the series. However, the Hops came out on top with a 7-5 victory, securing a 4-2 series win.

The Vancouver Canadians next home series begins on August 19 against the Tri-City Dust Devils.
