If you haven’t heard, the Vancouver Whitecaps are on a bit of a heater this season. They’re currently atop the MLS standings and on June 1, 2025 they suit up against Mexico City’s Cruz Azul F.C. for the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
After beating Inter Miami 5-1 on aggregate through the two game semifinal, the Whitecaps look to cap off an extraordinary CONCACAF season and pick up some momentum for the rest of the MLS season.
Currently, Vancouver remains undefeated throughout their last 14 games (7-0-7), breaking a three-game draw streak on Saturday by beating Real Salt Lake 3-2.
They still have to face the Minnesota United on May 28 in the MLS season before making the trip to Mexico to take on Cruz Azul.
While June 1 marks the final of the CONCACAF Championship, the season is far from over for the Whitecaps who will play MLS games through October.
The CONCACAF Championship is played between the top teams from North America, Caribbean and Central America, looking to crown a winner among the region. The victor will automatically qualify for both the 2025 FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.
There’s no doubt Cruz Azul are a powerhouse team: they have previously won six CONCACAF Championships as well as 9 league trophies.
Vancouver will be showing up in Mexico City with a mountainous task before them. After being ranked 28th in the CONCACAF standings at the end of December 2024, the Whitecaps have soared all the way to second place — behind only Cruz Azul — and this weekend’s final offers the biggest challenge yet for the club.
